The key quote follows.
“A CEO does only three things. Sets the overall vision and strategy of the company and communicates it to all stakeholders. Recruits, hires, and retains the very best talent for the company. Makes sure there is always enough cash in the bank.”
This description has been used by everyone from Sam Altman to Brad Feld.
In short, this has been adopted as the universal CEO Job Description.
Three items:
- Sets the overall vision and strategy of the company and communicates it to all stakeholders.

- Makes sure there is always enough cash in the bank.
Does the CEO have other responsibilities? Certainly.
However, this job description is the foundation for success.
And provides clarity around the expectations for the role.
