CEO Job Description

    CEO Job Description

A CEO has three big goals.

Twelve years ago this month, Fred Wilson posted the seminal “What a CEO Does” on his blog.

    The key quote follows.

“A CEO does only three things. Sets the overall vision and strategy of the company and communicates it to all stakeholders. Recruits, hires, and retains the very best talent for the company. Makes sure there is always enough cash in the bank.”

This description has been used by everyone from Sam Altman to Brad Feld.

In short, this has been adopted as the universal CEO Job Description.

    Three items:

    1. Sets the overall vision and strategy of the company and communicates it to all stakeholders.
    2. Recruits, hires, and retains the very best talent.
    3. Makes sure there is always enough cash in the bank.

Does the CEO have other responsibilities? Certainly.

However, this job description is the foundation for success.

And provides clarity around the expectations for the role.

Whether the CEO is you, someone you report to, or someone you support as a board member.

    Your turn.

    Now go spark that revolution.
